Ukulele, a Great Beginning Instrument for Children and Adults

Ukulele is very similar to the guitar. Two major differences are the size and sound of the ukulele. Ukuleles are much smaller than guitars. They come in 4 sizes: soprano, concerto, tenor and baritone. The soprano is the smallest size, most affordable and the most common size.

Most ukuleles have only 4 strings and many ukulele chords can be played with 1 or 2 fingers which makes it an easier instrument to learn than guitar. A ukulele is an ideal instrument for children. They are easy to hold, easy to fret and have fewer strings. After a year or so on the ukulele the guitar can be an easy transition.

The chord shapes for both ukulele and guitar are the same. The bottom 4 strings on a guitar are played just like a ukulele, however they are tuned to different keys. This makes the guitar easier to learn for ukulele players and vice a versa. An experienced guitar played will have no problem playing a ukulele without any instruction although ukulele can use a different strumming style.
